Chapter 4 & 5 double-entry journal
For each chapter, pick six passages which you feel are essential to helping to capture, convey who McCandless is and what motivated or shaped him, from family experiences to literature. One of those passages must be from quotes Krakauer uses at the beginning of each chapter. These quotes from other sources - sometimes chosen by McCandless sometimes not, seem to set up ideas that will be explored in the chapter. For each chapter, choose a portion of a passage(s) which you feel captures the essence of that passage. Write it down, and then explain why you think Krakuaer included that specific qutote. How does it relate to the chapter? The book as a whole? McCandless? You might consider what the passage suggests about the essential questions that Krakauer is concerned with in this book, thus revealing his purposes, his exigence for the book; or, consider how it nudges the reader towards carefullly considering an idea that inspired, or helps to explain, McCandless's behavior.
