Antigone is an
ancient story, but as we prepare to read it, let’s examine the core dilemma that
has made Sophocles’ play so vital throughout the ages: what do we do when the
laws of the state are at odds with our deepest moral values? This timeless
conflict is at the heart of the play, and we might argue, at the heart of
history. After all, hasn’t virtually all meaningful change happened because
someone said, “You may be the king, the queen, the government, but that’s not
right”?
RESEARCH PROJECT: The Individual
and the State
Choose an example from history (or current society) in which
a person or a group of people went against the state because of a conflict
between personal integrity and a law of the government. Your topic of research must not simply be
someone fighting for a change, like a protest.
A law must consciously be broken
for reasons of belief or ethics.
Your final project will be done in a digital presentation
format of your choosing (e.g., PPT, Sway, Prezi). Just make sure you have video, pictures, and
text.
Must
include:
Ø A digital
presentation which tells “the story” of your topic (see the order of the
categories below)
Ø The
following categories labeled on your slides (you might use these for your
notetaking in outline form)
Ø Background of the conflict (including
important names/places/dates)
Ø The Incident (including relevant names, places,
dates)
Ø The law broken
Ø The result (what happened afterwards? Did the person go to jail? Die?
How did society respond?)
Ø Evaluation:
Evaluate the individual’s or group’s actions. .
Do you think he/she/they were justified?
Why? Why not? Use a clear argument to support your view.
Ø
Works
Cited in MLA format (last slide)
Ø Time limit:
6-8 minutes (including 90 second video clip – see below)
Ø Relevant
video clip (no longer than 90 seconds)
Ø
A minimum of 14 slides
Ø
Three to five credible sources
Points possible: 50

Background Information
|
Presenters/documents clearly and insightfully explain the causes,
relevant background, important dates, people and places, and the resolution.
|
Presenters/documents adequately explain the causes, relevant
background, important dates, people and places, and the resolution.
|
Presenters/documents address some of the causes, relevant background,
important dates, people and places, and the resolution, but the evidence
& explanations lack depth and coherence.
|
Presenters/documents fail to clearly & adequately explain the
issue and tell the story.
|
Evaluation of Cause
|
Presentation clearly conveys whether you think he/she/they were
justified, and why or why not? Supporting argument is coherent, logical and
persuasive.
|
Presentation adequately conveys whether you think he/she/they were
justified, and why or why not? Supporting argument is coherent, but might not
be as logical, complete and persuasive as exemplary pieces.
|
Presentation addresses whether you think he/she/they were justified,
and why or why not; however, the supporting argument was not entirely clear,
and it lacked the depth and persuasive power of upper-half presentations.
|
Presentation fails to clearly convey (or only superficially
addresses) whether you think he/she/they were justified, and why or why not? Supporting
argument may lack depth, coherence, and clear logic.
|
Evidence/video
|
Thorough, well- chosen evidence from credible sources; smoothly
incorporates well-chosen evidence into slides and oral presentation
|
They use appropriate evidence,
though it may not be as well-chosen, thorough, or smoothly integrated as
evidence in the strongest papers.
|
Limited and/or superficial evidence (possibly from less credible
sources) suggest a less complex understanding of the topic.
|
May use superficial evidence which is inappropriate or insufficient
to establish background and make their own case. Evidence may be selected
from less credible sources.
|
Presentation
(delivery of content)
|
Speech was possibly inaudible; little eye contact; not much
enthusiasm; partners were not clear on who should speak to which points
|
Some difficulty hearing the speech; some eye contact; spots of
enthusiasm; some preparation was clear
|
Speech was mostly clear and audible; eye contact mostly effective;
enthusiasm was present but not sustained; some issues possible in preparation
|
Speech sustained clarity, volume, and eye contact; presenters were
engaged in their topic and clearly prepared
