1. Goal Setting/conferencing with
teachers

Early
in the year, you wrote a letter of introduction to me. One of the things you
addressed was related to what you wanted to improve upon in terms of your
academic English skills: reading, writing, vocabulary, discussion and research skills are broad categories that
come to mind. So, what do you want to
improve upon and why? Even if you don’t see academic English skills as being super
important to your academic or career goals, perhaps they will play some role
in your professional, personal or creative life. Consider
some of the skills below and then write a well-developed paragraph addressing
the following: Which skill would you most like to improve upon this year and
why? Also, what types of specific activities do you think you/we could do in
and out of class to help you improve those skills? Throw some ideas at me. Try
to be as specific as possible.

2. Creative Response

In
chapter 6, we read about Juliek’s beautiful violin music, which Elie somehow
heard (whether in a dream or in reality): “The darkness enveloped us. All I
could hear was the violin, and it was as if Juliek’s soul had become his
bow. He was playing his life. His whole
being was gliding over the strings (95)”.
Find a song you relate to in which you feel that the artist is
creating meaning in the midst of darkness or challenges. Share the lyrics and a link to the video or
audio. Then write a paragraph in which
you explain how this song speaks to you.
What thoughts and feelings does the artist seem to be exploring? Embed
(with quotes) and discuss some of the specific images or lines, and share
your thoughts on them. Most importantly, how do you relate to this song? What
has it helped you reflect on or just deal with? Explain some of your
thoughts, relatable moments, or feelings you experience(d) when you listen to
it.
