Antigone is an ancient story, but as we prepare to read it, let’s examine the core dilemma that has made Sophocles’ play so vital throughout the ages: what do we do when the laws of the state are at odds with our deepest moral values? This timeless conflict is at the heart of the play, and we might argue, at the heart of history. After all, hasn’t virtually all meaningful change happened because someone said, “You may be the king, the queen, the government, but that’s not right”?
RESEARCH PROJECT:  The Individual and the State
Choose an example from history (or current society) in which a person or a group of people went against the state because of a conflict between personal integrity and a law of the government.  Your topic of research must not simply be someone fighting for a change, like a protest.  A law must consciously be broken for reasons of belief or ethics.
Your final project will be done in a digital presentation format of your choosing (e.g., PPT, Sway, Prezi).  Just make sure you have video, pictures, and text.
Must include:
Ø  A digital presentation which tells “the story” of your topic (see the order of the categories below)
Ø  The following categories labeled on your slides (you might use these for your notetaking in outline form)
Ø  Background of the conflict (including important names/places/dates)
Ø  The Incident (including relevant names, places, dates)
Ø  The law broken
Ø  The result (what happened afterwards?  Did the person go to jail?  Die?  How did society respond?)
Ø  Evaluation:  Evaluate the individual’s or group’s actions.  .  Do you think he/she/they were justified?  Why?  Why not?  Use a clear argument to support your view.
Ø  Works Cited in MLA format (last slide)
Ø  Time limit: 6-8 minutes (including 90 second video clip – see below)
Ø  Relevant video clip (no longer than 90 seconds)
Ø  A minimum of 14 slides
Ø  Three to five credible sources
Points possible:  50

Presenters/documents adequately explain the causes, relevant background, important dates, people and places, and the resolution.

Presenters/documents address some of the causes, relevant background, important dates, people and places, and the resolution, but the evidence & explanations lack depth and coherence.

Presenters/documents fail to clearly & adequately explain the issue and tell the story.
Evaluation of Cause

Presentation clearly conveys whether you think he/she/they were justified, and why or why not? Supporting argument is coherent, logical and persuasive.
Presentation adequately conveys whether you think he/she/they were justified, and why or why not? Supporting argument is coherent, but might not be as logical, complete and persuasive as exemplary pieces.
Presentation addresses whether you think he/she/they were justified, and why or why not; however, the supporting argument was not entirely clear, and it lacked the depth and persuasive power of upper-half presentations.
Presentation fails to clearly convey (or only superficially addresses) whether you think he/she/they were justified, and why or why not? Supporting argument may lack depth, coherence, and clear logic.
Evidence/video
Thorough, well- chosen evidence from credible sources; smoothly incorporates well-chosen evidence into slides and oral presentation
They use appropriate evidence, though it may not be as well-chosen, thorough, or smoothly integrated as evidence in the strongest papers.
Limited and/or superficial evidence (possibly from less credible sources) suggest a less complex understanding of the topic.
May use superficial evidence which is inappropriate or insufficient to establish background and make their own case. Evidence may be selected from less credible sources.

Hand out Semester Exam exemptions

Change of plans!!!...

Let's put aside Antigone  until next semester.  This just isn't going to work, and there is no sense rushing this. (I will hand back your pre-reading question sheets - they will become a 3rd quarter grade). Please hold onto them.

Today, we will take a brief glimpse at the semester exam prompt and then rewatch part of Happy, one of the texts that you can reference in your semester exam synthesis essays.  Take careful notes.

Tomorrow, we will have independent reading time and we will watch a little more of Happy. Please have something to read.

Monday and Tuesday will be exam prep days.  You will begin working on your outlines, watch a little more of Happy and do some independent reading if time allows.

Antigone Day 2

Day 2 Antigone
·        Review Pre-reading Questions
·        Collect pre-reading questions
·        Collect Hamlet peer review sheets (assigned last Frida, December 8 – 3 points)

Read 13-30 today
Assign readers…
We need multiple readers for the Chorus

Think about the following questions as we read:

Overarching questions:

How much power should the government have?

What responsibility does a person have to act in accordance with his or her conscience?

And, can the answers to both of these questions coexist with one another?

What is more important to you, civic responsibilities or personal responsibilities?

Is there a particular value or belief that if denied to you or others you would be willing to face imprisonment or death in fighting for that right?

Specific Questions…

What is the essential conflict between Ismene and Antigone?

Which character are you more like, Ismene or Antigone? Which character do you admire more?

Is it more important to be calm and live to fight another day or to fight injustice in the moment you see it, regardless of risk?

What values does the chorus seem to voice?  What aspect of Thebian society does the chorus represent?

What are Creons concerns? What does he value? What does he seem to especially hate?

How might the demands of Creon’s position influence his opinions?
